A big thank you to Mehvish Khan for representing Saftronics at the Leeds Manufacturing Festival event – Engineering Change: Women in Manufacturing.
Although women represent almost half of the labour force in the UK, they account for just 26% of all workers in the manufacturing sector and that’s far from the 35% industry target by 2035. Surveys show that a non-inclusive culture to be the primary barrier to women’s participation in the sector. This is followed by barriers in promotion and leadership, a lack of awareness and visibility of job opportunities, a lack of skills and training support and work-life balance.
The networking and fact-finding session for students at Mount St Mary’s, Leeds was an opportunity to see beyond the stereotypes and begin breaking down barriers.
Mehvish joined a panel of recently qualified apprentices, highly skilled and experienced technicians and professionals, managing directors and other local company owners, so that the students from across all year groups could have the chance to meet, talk to and find out more about the careers of women working in engineering and manufacturing roles at all levels and at all stages of their careers.
“As part of the event, I had the chance to speak with small groups of students in short, focused conversations—sharing insights into my own career journey, the wide range of opportunities within engineering and manufacturing, and the skills that are most valued in the industry.”
It was energizing to see so much curiosity and enthusiasm from the students. I hope our conversations helped them see that engineering and manufacturing is not only a viable career path but one full of growth, creativity, and impact.
Events like this are vital for breaking down stereotypes and helping young women envision themselves in roles they may not have considered before!
